In the event of a power failure or other service interruption, your employees will utilize emergency lighting systems to get to safety.

These devices guide you in case there is an issue with fire alarm systems communicating emergencies or fires being extinguished by sprinklers. Emergency lights are specifically designed for this purpose while exit signs help point out exits when they may be difficult to see during low-light conditions such as blackouts and smoke from fires that obstruct visibility en route to safe evacuation.

It is important that your business meets standard requirements for emergency lighting and exit lights to ensure the safety of anyone in your building during an emergency.

Proper mounting and installation of your emergency lights and exit signs is essential to ensuring they perform as needed. For exit lighting and emergency lights alike, hardwiring is required, as they need to be connected to your building’s wiring to detect emergencies like power outages.

At First-Line Fire, we’ll handle the installation of your safety lights so we can guarantee they meet necessary requirements and can perform when you need them to.

Commercial Emergency Lighting & Exit Lights

In a commercial building, exit and emergency lights are some of the most critical elements when it comes to safety. In the event of a fire, power outage, or other emergency, commercial emergency lights or exit lights serve the primary purpose of guiding employees and customers to safety.

To meet emergency lighting requirements, commercial buildings must abide by certain local and federal light codes and regulations. These include, but are not limited to:

  • All exits must be clearly marked with signage featuring the word “exit”

  • Where the path to the nearest exit is not clear, there must be clear signage directing the reader to an exit

  • Routine testing and maintenance must be performed to ensure emergency lights and exit signs are in working order

Consulting with a professional like First-Line Fire can ensure the performance of your exit and emergency lights for business purposes. It is critical that emergency lights for commercial buildings abide by federal and local regulations, including standards established by OSHA and the NFPA.

When we perform an emergency or exit light inspection, we won’t cut corners. It’s important to us to ensure that your devices are working properly so that your business complies with regulations and you feel comfortable relying on your emergency lights as needed.

During a light inspection, our technicians will inspect the system to make sure that it’s in proper condition in accordance with NFPA standards. We’ll conduct a full test of the lighting system to ensure that it will illuminate for the required minimum of 90 minutes, which are NFPA, OSHA, and NEC minimum standards. We’ll clean all battery terminals and leads and inspect bulbs to ensure they are operational and meet lighting requirements.

Your bulbs’ energy efficiency is also important. We’ll verify that they’re operating at maximum efficiency and survey the emergency lights for proper placement and direction. Once finished, we’ll tag and label all devices as required and provide you with sufficient records.
